INTELIHEALTH - Web-based training about eating disorders may help dentists and dental hygienists talk with patients and help them get treatment.

A study from the University of South Florida tested the program. It was designed to educate dental health professionals about eating disorders. The study involved 66 dentists and dental hygienists.

The program described signs of eating disorders that can be seen in the mouth. It discussed how dental care providers can help to prevent these problems. The course also covered how to talk with patients and how to refer them for treatment.

People who completed the program said it gave them useful information and resources. Nine of 10 said they would use it in the future when they needed information about eating disorders.

Eating disorders can cause several symptoms in the mouth. They include:

  • Eroded teeth from stomach acids
  • Enlarged salivary glands
  • Dry mouth
  • Inflamed gums
  • Sores in the mouth

About 24 million Americans have an eating disorder. Common ones include anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating disorder.

The study appears in the June issue of the Journal of Dental Education.
