Pins and posts can both be used to help strengthen the tooth and help fillings and crowns stay in place. After a root canal, the most common thing is to use a post with an attached core. Pins are more commonly used to retain filling material in teeth that have not had root canals. Pins are becoming less popular. Reportedly, some dental schools no longer teach the pin technique.
Both have risks and benefits. Posts can break or fall out, and can fracture the tooth. Pins also can fracture the tooth. Because of their smaller size, pins may not be enough. Posts are more expensive because the materials cost more and they are more time consuming than pins. I would discuss the pros and cons of each approach with your dentist.
