Smoking and drinking can affect your oral health. But they do not cause bleeding. You have gingivitis. This is a mild bacterial infection of the gums. Symptoms include swelling, tenderness and bleeding.
Gingivitis is reversible. If you have not seen a dentist lately, schedule an appointment. The dental professional will be able to examine you, clean your teeth, and recommend a good home care routine. The bleeding will stop once the bacteria have been removed (through good oral hygiene). Proper brushing and flossing are key. Your dentist probably also will take X-rays. These will help him or her see tooth decay or bone loss.
