Q: I just noticed that my son's two lower front teeth are loose. He is 4 years 10 months old. Is this normal? I heard that the normal age to start losing baby teeth was 6.

Courtney H. Chinn, D.D.S., M.P.H. is an assistant professor at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. As a pediatric dentist, Dr. Chinn has provided care for young children in a variety of dental settings including mobile dental vans, community health centers, and school based clinics. Dr. Chinn also has served children with special needs, children with chronic illnesses, and other unique child populations. He is working with local Head Start centers to improve the oral health of young children from birth to age five and their families in the Washington Heights community in Northern Manhattan.

The two lower front teeth are usually the first ones to become loose and fall out. Most children lose these teeth around 6 or 7 years old. But each child is unique. Some children begin losing teeth earlier, while others can be a bit older. Your son is not too young to have loose teeth, but if you are very concerned, a dentist could take an x-ray to make sure his teeth are developing correctly.
