We never like to see children suffer from so much tooth decay that they need to have teeth removed. But when necessary, extraction can be done safely. There are safety concerns related to the anesthesia, and to caring for the area after the procedure.
Leaving badly decayed teeth in the mouth may present even more safety concerns than removing them. The infection in these teeth can spread to other areas of the head and neck. This is much worse than having a few cavities.
Talk to your dentist about how your child's comfort will be ensured, what kinds of anesthetics and possible sedatives may be used, and how to ensure that risks are kept to a minimum.
