Missing teeth this way is a fairly common problem. Dentists have technical terms for this condition. If you are missing six or fewer teeth, it is called hypodontia. If you are missing more than six teeth, it is called oligodontia.
Most often, people are missing some of their wisdom teeth (third molars). However, it sounds like you may be missing other teeth.
Other commonly missing teeth:
- The teeth next to the two upper front teeth
- The teeth in front of each upper first permanent molar
- The teeth in front of each first lower permanent molar
- The teeth in front of each lower canine tooth
Genetic factors play a role in missing teeth. It's likely that at least one of you relatives also has missing teeth.
There is little to worry about with this condition. Dentists can now replace those teeth with implants. No one except you and your dentist will know that you were missing teeth.
